uxo parece um reality show. Entre promessas de wellness hubs, spas de celeb=
ridade e ambientes =E2=80=9Cregenerativos=E2=80=9D, quase esquecemos que co=
mprar uma casa deveria ser um ato de escolha - n=C3=A3o de sobreviv=C3=AAnc=
ia. Pois bem: li no Observer uma an=C3=A1lise implac=C3=A1vel sobre o merca=
do imobili=C3=A1rio global - e entendi por que ele n=C3=A3o quer ser compre=
endido. Comprar uma casa, dizia o texto, =C3=A9 a =C3=BAnica grande decis=
=C3=A3o da vida moderna que ainda parece feita para confundir. Voc=C3=AA po=
de comprar um carro online, investir com um toque ou declarar imposto de re=
nda num aplicativo. Mas tente comprar um im=C3=B3vel: de repente, surge um =
labirinto de intermedi=C3=A1rios, jarg=C3=B5es e taxas que ningu=C3=A9m exp=
lica direito - at=C3=A9 que j=C3=A1 custaram caro demais. O texto defende q=
ue essa complexidade n=C3=A3o =C3=A9 um erro do sistema. =C3=89 o sistema. =
E, no Brasil, essa constata=C3=A7=C3=A3o ganha contornos ainda mais agudos.=
Entre o corretor que vende lifestyle, o arquiteto que precisa traduzir o m=
etro quadrado em status e a construtora que se diz sustent=C3=A1vel porque =
plantou uma muda no canteiro, o resultado =C3=A9 o mesmo: o consumidor se p=
erde entre promessa e propaganda. A transpar=C3=AAncia virou um luxo raro. =
Num mercado que adora falar de prop=C3=B3sito e ESG, ainda =C3=A9 dif=C3=AD=
cil descobrir quem realmente entrega o que anuncia - e a quem isso serve. T=
alvez o novo luxo do setor n=C3=A3o seja o m=C3=A1rmore importado, mas a si=

em algo mais profundo: um luxo comprometido com a preserva=C3=A7=C3=A3o dos=
saberes populares, o reaproveitamento de materiais, a consci=C3=AAncia amb=
iental e, sobretudo, o respeito ao fazer manual e =C3=A0s comunidades afro-=
ind=C3=ADgenas que inspiram a minha trajet=C3=B3ria. O que me move =C3=A9 m=
ostrar que a verdadeira sofistica=C3=A7=C3=A3o brasileira est=C3=A1 nesse g=
esto de conex=C3=A3o, nessa fus=C3=A3o entre ancestralidade e contemporanei=
dade. Busco revelar uma arquitetura de interiores que rompe com a =E2=80=9C=
brasilidade pasteurizada=E2=80=9D, ainda presa =C3=A0 escola fria do modern=
ismo. A cultura brasileira vai muito al=C3=A9m do que se consome. O luxo qu=
e me interessa =C3=A9 o que nasce da alma e dialoga com o mundo sem perder =
o sotaque da terra. =C3=89 o mesmo caminho trilhado por mestres como Janete=
Costa, Jos=C3=A9 Zanine Caldas e Osiris Rocha, todos guiados por essa sabe=

2. Muitos arquitetos tratam a cultura como ornamento; voc=C3=AA a transform=
a em estrutura, estou certa? Como traduzir refer=C3=AAncias regionais, arte=
sanato e mem=C3=B3ria em linguagem contempor=C3=A2nea, sem cair no folcl=C3=
=B3rico ou no decorativo?
A cultura, pra mim, n=C3=A3o =C3=A9 algo que se compra, =C3=A9 algo que se =
vive. Caminho por Mil=C3=A3o, Nova York, Paris e S=C3=A3o Paulo, mas tamb=
=C3=A9m piso o ch=C3=A3o do samba de coco em Est=C3=A2ncia, em Sergipe. Qua=
ndo estou no samba-enredo da minha escola Vai-Vai ou com Mestre Sacy da Mal=
oca, quilombo urbano de Aracaju, sinto o mesmo pulsar. Participo do Cortejo=
Afro, do Il=C3=AA Aiy=C3=AA, em Salvador, e tudo isso faz parte do meu mod=
o de estar no mundo. Essas viv=C3=AAncias formam minha pele, minha escuta, =
meu olhar. Quando trago isso para o trabalho, n=C3=A3o =C3=A9 c=C3=A1lculo,=
=C3=A9 naturalidade. Est=C3=A1 no que vejo, no que penso, no que desejo pa=
ra o futuro. Traduzir essas refer=C3=AAncias =C3=A9, na verdade, permitir q=
ue elas respirem. Quando revisito um material ou uma t=C3=A9cnica, refor=C3=
=A7o que a arte est=C3=A1 presente - n=C3=A3o como adorno, mas como estrutu=
ra vital. =C3=89 ela que me torna inteiro como arquiteto nordestino. A magi=
a est=C3=A1 em transformar essa materialidade em linguagem, em encontrar ha=
rmonia entre o ancestral e o novo, entre o fazer e o sentir. =C3=89 um desa=
fio constante - do objeto =C3=A0 casa, do edif=C3=ADcio =C3=A0 cidade - e t=
udo isso se reflete tamb=C3=A9m nas artes visuais, que venho explorando com=
mais frequ=C3=AAncia nesta =C3=BAltima d=C3=A9cada. Tudo =C3=A9 extens=C3=
=A3o de uma mesma pulsa=C3=A7=C3=A3o criativa.
3. Em um mundo saturado de imagens, o que diferencia um projeto aut=C3=AAnt=
ico, nascido da mem=C3=B3ria, de outro que apenas imita tend=C3=AAncias?
A autenticidade, pra mim, =C3=A9 g=C3=AAnese. Ela nasce do encontro, da tro=
ca, do movimento interno que nos tira do lugar comum. A cada projeto, busco=
me reinventar, reencontrar um novo ser em mim - com prop=C3=B3sito e escut=
a. =C3=89 claro que, na arquitetura e nos interiores, h=C3=A1 sempre o atra=
vessamento do cliente, e =C3=A9 nessa rela=C3=A7=C3=A3o que proponho a verd=
adeira conex=C3=A3o. Um projeto aut=C3=AAntico exige tempo, estudo e imperm=
an=C3=AAncia. =C3=89 um exerc=C3=ADcio de trocas e de retorno, o que chamo =
de Sankofa. Retornar =C3=A9 olhar para tr=C3=A1s com respeito, reconhecer o=
que j=C3=A1 foi feito e, a partir da=C3=AD, caminhar com consci=C3=AAncia.=
Se for pra quebrar a tradi=C3=A7=C3=A3o, que seja em nome do coletivo. Se =
for pra preserv=C3=A1-la, que seja aprimorando-a. Precisamos olhar mais par=
a dentro e menos para as telas; buscar inspira=C3=A7=C3=A3o na literatura, =
no teatro, no cinema, na natureza - porque tudo j=C3=A1 est=C3=A1 ali, post=
o. O artista que n=C3=A3o entende que o p=C3=B3s-contempor=C3=A2neo =C3=A9 =
exercitar a humildade diante do mundo ainda n=C3=A3o se abriu ao essencial.=
A beleza est=C3=A1 nas pequenas magias, nas medidas exatas, nas pausas. No=
sso of=C3=ADcio =C3=A9 trabalhar com escala, propor=C3=A7=C3=A3o e luz - e =
=C3=A9 a=C3=AD que o extraordin=C3=A1rio acontece.
4. Arquitetura e design ainda s=C3=A3o muitas vezes vistos como privil=C3=
=A9gios. Como voc=C3=AA enxerga o papel social de um projeto autoral - em A=
racaju, Salvador ou S=C3=A3o Paulo - para transformar comunidades, valoriza=
r artistas locais e projetar uma identidade nacional?
Ainda =C3=A9 privil=C3=A9gio, sim. Cerca de 80% da popula=C3=A7=C3=A3o bras=
ileira constr=C3=B3i e decora suas casas sem o aux=C3=ADlio de um profissio=
nal. Mas h=C3=A1 tamb=C3=A9m um dado que nos anima: quase o mesmo percentua=
l j=C3=A1 tem acesso =C3=A0 internet. Isso muda tudo. O papel social do arq=
uiteto hoje vai al=C3=A9m do canteiro de obras. Est=C3=A1 tamb=C3=A9m na fo=
rma como produz e compartilha conte=C3=BAdo - nas imagens que circulam e ga=
nham diferentes significados, a depender de quem as v=C3=AA, seja na zona r=
ural, na cidade grande ou nas periferias. Falar de design, por exemplo, =C3=
=A9 dif=C3=ADcil quando, em muitas casas de favela, a sala de jantar nem ex=
iste, pois os espa=C3=A7os s=C3=A3o totalmente integrados e multifuncionais=
. E se olharmos para os kijemes patax=C3=B3s (moradias vernaculares feitas =
de madeira e fibras naturais), veremos o mesmo: uma integra=C3=A7=C3=A3o to=
tal entre viver, dormir e conviver. Questionamos o loft nova-iorquino, mas =
talvez nossos parentes ind=C3=ADgenas se identifiquem mais com essa forma l=
ivre de habitar. Quando vivi uma experi=C3=AAncia em uma aldeia ap=C3=B3s f=
ortes chuvas, fui acreditando que poderia =E2=80=9Cajudar=E2=80=9D com uma =
arquitetura mais s=C3=B3lida e dur=C3=A1vel. Em dois dias, percebi que o es=
sencial n=C3=A3o estava no projeto - estava na mata. Fui com eles colher ma=
deiras, separar palhas e fibras. Questionei se, com o tempo, a chuva n=C3=
=A3o destruiria tudo, e o cacique Sirat=C3=A3, um jovem s=C3=A1bio, me resp=
ondeu: =E2=80=9CWesley, aqui temos a oportunidade de levar nossos filhos =
=C3=A0 floresta e ensinar o que nossos antepassados nos ensinaram. Fazer no=
ssa casa =C3=A9 parte da nossa cultura. Por isso, ela n=C3=A3o deve durar m=
ais que vinte anos, para que as novas gera=C3=A7=C3=B5es aprendam o respeit=
o =C3=A0 natureza - que parimos dela e para ela voltaremos.=E2=80=9D Essa l=
i=C3=A7=C3=A3o me transformou. Entendi que a cidade formal (n=C3=B3s) ainda=
tem muito o que aprender com as comunidades. Elas s=C3=A3o fortes fontes d=
e saberes, pois a resist=C3=AAncia e a precariedade geram uma forma diferen=
te de ver o mundo e a natureza das coisas. A beleza da arte que vir=C3=A1 n=
asce desse lugar - e, na arquitetura, acredito, n=C3=A3o ser=C3=A1 diferent=
e.
A embaixada onde o rei descansa em rede
A Wallpaper acaba de publicar uma mat=C3=A9ria sobre a reforma da Embaixada=
Brit=C3=A2nica em Bras=C3=ADlia, conduzida pelo escrit=C3=B3rio Hersen Men=
des Arquitetura - e foi o empurr=C3=A3o que eu precisava para revisitar ess=
a obra que, silenciosamente, j=C3=A1 habitava meu radar. O projeto foi enco=
mendado em 2023, com a miss=C3=A3o de preparar a casa para receber a nova e=
mbaixadora brit=C3=A2nica, Stephanie Al-Qaq, e devolveu f=C3=B4lego contemp=
or=C3=A2neo a um =C3=ADcone modernista. A equipe mergulhou nos desenhos e p=
lantas originais da d=C3=A9cada de 1960 para recuperar =C3=A2ngulos, volume=
s e materiais que expressam o DNA de Bras=C3=ADlia, inserindo uma camada at=
ual de conforto, luz e fluidez. O resultado =C3=A9 uma diplomacia visual en=
tre dois mundos: a precis=C3=A3o brit=C3=A2nica e a leveza brasileira. O in=
terior =C3=A9 um cap=C3=ADtulo =C3=A0 parte. O mobili=C3=A1rio re=C3=BAne n=

m>Ainda é privilégio, sim. Cerca de 80% da população br=
asileira constrói e decora suas casas sem o auxílio de um profiss=
ional. Mas há também um dado que nos anima: quase o mesmo percent=
ual já tem acesso à internet. Isso muda tudo. O papel social do a=
rquiteto hoje vai além do canteiro de obras. Está também na =
forma como produz e compartilha conteúdo - nas imagens que circulam e =
ganham diferentes significados, a depender de quem as vê, seja na zona=
rural, na cidade grande ou nas periferias. Falar de design, por exemplo, &=
#233; difícil quando, em muitas casas de favela, a sala de jantar nem =
existe, pois os espaços são totalmente integrados e multifunciona=
is. E se olharmos para os kijemes pataxós (moradias vernaculares feita=
s de madeira e fibras naturais), veremos o mesmo: uma integração =
total entre viver, dormir e conviver. Questionamos o loft nova-iorquino, ma=
s talvez nossos parentes indígenas se identifiquem mais com essa forma=
livre de habitar. Quando vivi uma experiência em uma aldeia após=
fortes chuvas, fui acreditando que poderia “ajudar” com uma ar=
quitetura mais sólida e durável. Em dois dias, percebi que o esse=
ncial não estava no projeto - estava na mata. Fui com eles colher made=
iras, separar palhas e fibras. Questionei se, com o tempo, a chuva não=
destruiria tudo, e o cacique Siratã, um jovem sábio, me responde=
u: “Wesley, aqui temos a oportunidade de levar nossos filhos à f=
loresta e ensinar o que nossos antepassados nos ensinaram. Fazer nossa casa=
é parte da nossa cultura. Por isso, ela não deve durar mais que =
